Wolfe as Authority (Is that a minotaur I hear?)

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

I happen to think both of these statements are right on the money. I also
suspect that Wolfe is this way when people come up to him at conventions and
ask him questions, and know from personal correspondence that he can be both
outright straightforward and maddeningly elusive at the same time. Kinda
makes hash of Peter Wright's contention that Wolfe _wants_ us to understand
him, doesn't it? (Although I do think the co-opting of Severian into RETURN
TO THE WHORL will turn out to be yet another attempt by the author at
clarifying some of the central plotpoints in the New Sun mythos.)

Then again, if Wolfe was anyway else, he'd be somebody other than the
Daedalean writer we all love and respect, and the pilpulist nature of this
group would be so much the poorer.
