This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. With respect to rats writing, I read that as saying
that rats fouled the books with their waste and left
footprints, etc.  These tracks and evidences are a
kind of writing in that one can "read" them, gleaning
details of the rat's life.

In this sense, a footprint means "I (a rat) was here".

Check out semiotics for careful definitions of the
difference between a footprint and a drawing of a
footprint and so on.
