Crowley's The Translator

Matthew Davis · 31 Mar 2002, 13:26 · from urth-v0203.mbox · original

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

The "poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world" quote is from
Shelley, not Auden. "Poet" in Greek means "maker", so poets _are_ the
creators of our world, in as much they shape our understanding of them.
Besides Nabokov and Brodsky, I also wonder how much Robert Frost might be an
influence - at the time of the Cuba Crisis I think he made some notable
comment but I can't remember what. But then again copies of "The Translator"
haven't even begun appearing over in the UK, so what do I know.
