5HC a good introduction to wolfe? (was Washington

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

         Methinks Dan'l is right. Gene Wolfe is pointing to the "heart of 
darkness" in everyman/woman, and using himself as an example. Number Five 
and Maitre are what Everyman could be -- and what Gene would be apart from 
saving grace. Remember: Wolfe believes in Original Sin. And there has been 
discussion here of the fact that evidently he has a "depressive 
personality." It all fits.

Really?  I thought the name thing was just a joke.  Not that
the character
is supposed to have any real relationship or resemblence to the
