This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Nigel,
         I think you have 1/2 of the reason Wolfe uses this old SF tropes=20
(that he grew up with it and has some nostalgia for it). The other is what=20
he himself has said: that these are also the old tropes of traditional=20
pre-modern literature. All premodern literature, he insists, is fantasy=20
literature. The lurid stuff you mentioned is also in the Odyssey, the=20
Kalevala, Bulfinch's *Mythology,* etc.; though of course not in the SF form.
