This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Very tempting--sort of "Fondly Fahrenheit"-ish--but I think you have
to assume that afterwards Marsch revised his journals, at least to say
that Victor has unusual green eyes, which Number Five tells us that
John V. Marsch has too.  Of course, Marsch could conceivably have made
that revision, even in his former handwriting.  Then the officer who
reads the journals could fail to notice that that part of the sentence
had been added in the margin or whatever, or the italicized narration
could fail to mention that he noticed.  Hardly seems fair on Wolfe's
part, though.  I think there are some other correspondences between
Marsch's descriptions of Victor and our later knowledge of John V.
Marsch, but I can't remember any.
