God in the Machine

Michael Straight · 10 Oct 2002, 16:42 · from urth-v0210.mbox · original

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Re: Garden of Eden:

If Whorl=3DGarden and Pas=3DGod, then Outsider=3D???

RE: knowledge of good and evil:

'Knowledge' here should be read as (if you know Spanish) 'conocer' rather
than 'saber' (to be familiar with vs. to be aware of). I know a lot about
Bill Clinton, but I don't know him. The same Hebrew word is used later in
Genesis to say Adam knew his wife Eve and she gave birth.

So Adam and Eve (presumably) knew the difference between good and evil,
but they had not had experience with (knowledge of) good and evil.
