This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

couldn't quite place.

All in all, I am convinced by what you've said on the subject. In my defens=

(you asked what the source of the confusion was) all I can say is that I wa=

left with that feeling (so frequent with Wolfe) that something was going on=20
that I hadn't got my finger on yet. To be honest I still have that feeling.=20
There's something about that passage that, taken in the narrative style of=20
[Marble/Rose], seems discordant (at least with the easiest way of=20
understanding [Marble/Rose]).
