brief "purpose of Whorl" reply

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Recently, the interview in which Wolfe claimed that Blue and Green where th=
e=20
destination of Typhon was put forth, and that his purpose was returning man=
 to=20
the stars. I don't think this destroys the Blue is Urth idea. I have alwa=
ys=20
insisted that Typhon wanted to re-colonize, and that he knew that the Urth =
was=20
facing a calamity, and that he wanted his ship to return. I think it just=20
returned much later in time than he planned, but still tried to drop off a=20
copy of Pas/Typhon to be worshipped on the "new" ancestral home of mankind.=
 =20
THEN it continued on its way outward to the stars, as it left at the end,=20
after insuring that Typhon (or at least some memory of him as Pas) was left=20
behind in the minds of the new inhabitants - self aggrandizement was always=20
his theme, and he wanted to leave a marker that would outlive and immortali=
ze=20
him. Then mankind could go back out to the stars, after the plan of Pas was=20
fulfilled. That's the best I can do now.
