Apollo and Pan

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

The recent mention of Apollo in reference to Severian reminded me of=20
something I meant to share earlier. In Ovid, and in Bach's cantata *The=20
Contest of Phoebus and Pan,* we have a story of a musical battle between=20
Pan (Pas) and Phoebus (Apollo). Pan's music is earthly; Apollo's heavenly.=20
Pan challenges Apollo, seeking to usurp the god's position. He loses, of=20
course.

Sort of interesting grist for the old Lupine mill, isn't it? I doubt if=20
Wolfe knows the Bach, but I'll bet he knows the Ovid.
