1000 years to Typhon

maa32 · 20 Feb 2003, 19:52 · from urth-v0302.mbox · original

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

"Still for a thousand years" does not seem like a hard and fast date. =20
However, this is my whole point - a whole lot of time does not have to have=20
passed after the flooding of Urth for things to have changed enough. =20
Hybridization creates mutant monsters in as little as one generation - and=20
often monsters that are sterile. And we really don't have an absolutely fi=
rm=20
time between Typhon and Severian. 1200 years could be called a thousand, j=
ust=20
as 900 years could be called a thousand. But a lot can change in 200 years=
. =20
Especially if monsters can change in one generation, as the inhumu obviousl=
y,=20
obviously can. The moon could still be reeling from the presence of a new=20
gravitational force into the system and be in an unstable orbit. But it se=
ems=20
as though Maytera Marble's internal clock is off by a factor of ten, at lea=
st=20
hinting that 300 years might conceivably be 3000 or some greater span of ti=
me.
 But I never could make much use of her slipping clock because everything e=
lse=20
seemed to indicate that it was about 300 years in the whorl.
