This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

The statement early in *Shadow* that "we think that we invent symbols. In=20
reality they invent us" is priceless. I've used it many times, and seen it=20
quoted by others also. (I'm sure it's familiar to you all, so I won't look=20
it up and cite it all here.)
         It ties in with recent discussions about Wolfe's view of human=20
behavior. If a bad person begins to symbolize himself as good, and=20
play-acts at being good, he may gradually become good. This is actually=20
from Pascal, in a way. When asked, "I don't feel like a Christian. I don't=20
think my heart is right"; Pascal's advice was to act like a Christian, and=20
you'll find that you have become one.
