Wolfe's little stories

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Wolfe's short story collections are a mixed bag. Some stories I really
like, some I don't enjoy that much. Island of Doctor Death has some
fantastic novellas: Seven American Nights, Tracking Song, Eyeflash
Miracles.

Here's the order I'd rank the collections, with my favorites:

Island of Doctor Death
 The Death of Doctor Island
 Tracking Song
 The Eyeflash Miracles
 Seven American Nights
 Alien Stones

Endangered Species
When I Was Ming the Merciless
 The Last Thrilling Wonder Story
 A Cabin on the Coast
 Thag
 The Other Dead Man
 Peritonitis
 The HORARS of War

Castle of Days
 Forlesen
How I Lost the Second World War
 The War Beneath the Tree

Storeys from the Old Hotel
 Westwind
 The Marvelous Brass Chessplaying Automaton
 A Solar Labyrinth

Strange Travellers
My least favorite. "And When they Appear" and "The Ziggurat" are good
stories, but kind of grim. "To the Seventh" is fun and I like "Bed and
Breakfast," but they aren't great.
