This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

I'm not sure it's quite so categorical as that. By
"private" I would assume that Crowley meant highly
idiosyncratic and a kind of belief that really wasn't
open to someone's "choosing" -- just as Smoky can
never really "choose" to believe (although the people
who settled in the area a few generations before Smoky
could be said to have "converted"). But I don't think
it makes sense to call all religion "private,"
especially since institutionalized religion enters the
"public sphere" in a way that my own quirky beliefs
don't. Maybe it's more a matter of degree, but to call
all religion "private" blurs an important distinction
between a public, "official" and even political use of
religion that, for example, private Theosophists might
not quite be capable of experiencing.

Besides, Severian's New Sun was going to redeem an
entire world, not just himself.

I certainly hope so, but who are you thinking of in particular?
