urth-urth.net Digest, Vol 6, Issue 10

Jim Raylor · 05 Feb 2005, 18:32 · from 2005-February.txt.gz

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Just to makr it clear, I never intended to suggest
Gene Wolfe was in favour of slavery, just that his
understanding of it in historical context was deeper
than the usual one-sided view.
Before the Severian dynasty gave citizenshop to all
freemen in the Empire (212 AD),a slave in a good Roman
household had more rights and social standing than
most free non-Romans.

Latro never saw Io as a slave, but that seems to be
how she sees herself, albeit a slave who actually
chooses her destiny.
