One thing Wolfe characters do not do

Dan Parmenter · 12 Feb 2001, 18:17 · from whorl-v0012.mbox · original

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Folks -=20

Like many of you, I'm in the middle of re-reading both BotLS and BotSS
in tandem (which isn't all that odd to do) and in addition to all the
"ahh, *I* see" moments, I found myself idly noticing something that
seems a little unusual to me: Wolfe's characters variously curse,
argue, fight, change clothes, wash, go to the bathroom, drink and take
drugs, but the one thing no character in these books does is smoke.
No pipes, cigars, chillums or cheroots appear in any of these books.
Am I right? I doubt if it means anything, but I can't help but wonder
if it was deliberate.
