This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

I recently observed that Return to the Whorl is available for download on o=
ne=20
of those Microsoft Readers.  Does anybody know if the typos that had someho=
w=20
crept into the hardback edition of the text were expunged for this effort? =20
Does anybody know whether the paperback coming out next year will have the=20
errors fixed?
On another note, does anybody know if Wolfe ever read Melville's Confidence=20
Man?  I know that several people have done a convincing job linking Moby Di=
ck=20
with The Book of the New Sun, but I think there are a lot of explicit links=
 in=20
theme and presentation with Melville's last prose work (published in his=20
lifetime, anyway).  It does some interesting things with identity and memor=
y=20
that would probably appeal to Wolfe.
