Are you sure that this isn't from history rather than fiction? And didn't the Kafka device write and write and write on the victim until death ensued (or am I thinking of some other work here?)? The device in the Matachin tower seems more like a "Scarlet Letter" brand Autodoc-cum-tatooiton, that is, not lethal by itself. =mantis=
