Other authors
Perennial favorite 'other' author on the list seems to be John Crowley
Jonathan Carroll's last two novels (White Apples and The Wooden Sea) are worth checking out.
I'm not sure I would call Jack Vance "brilliant," but he fits your other criteria. However, some people seem to have heard of him . . .
Another thought, albeit out-of-genre, is Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet; but only if you have considerable patience.
Best,

I want to buy a book no one’s ever heard of that is incredibly good. So I’m coming to you. I know lots of Wolfe-like authors have been discussed on the list before. Tell me what book I should buy. (And by something like Wolfe I mean something well-written, thought-provoking, brilliant, and relatively clean.)
