This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Okay, I don't have a copy of the Lex, so I don't know what it
says there ... but ... "longfather" is simply an antique word
for a male ancestor distant enough that you can't (or don't=3D20
want to bother) counting out the "greats" -- typically one who
plays a patronymic or patriarchal role in the family history;
Abraham would be "longfather" to the Jews. (Note that this does
not exclude the concept of "culture hero," but does not
require it.) The only modern use of the word I know outside of
Wolfe is -- who's surprised? -- Tolkien, who refers somewhere
to the "longfathers of the Dwarves."
